TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Metro Jaya Police Traffic Director, Commissioner Sambodo Purnomo Yogo, announced on Wednesday that cyclists riding outside the available cycle lanes will be sanctioned and receive verbal warnings.
“From this morning at 6.30 am, we mobilized a team of staff to discipline cyclists traveling outside the cycle paths on 6.30 am. [time limit]Sambodo confirmed on June 2.
Hours of operation for cyclists on unscheduled cycle lanes have been set from 5 a.m. to 6.30 a.m. on weekdays, following a meeting between Metro Jaya police and the Jakarta administration. Cyclists who cycle outside the lanes will be subject to penalties and will be fined.
However, Sambodo Purnomo acknowledged that the new rule is a precedent and is carefully worded. Regulators are also considering providing special lanes for “road bikes” that ride above average rider speeds on other types of bikes.
“This could be the first time that Indonesia will make stops on non-motorized transport, namely bicycles,” said the police commissioner.
